Cepea, October 2, 2024 – In the partial of the current season (2024/25 – from April 1st to September 2024), the average of the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for hydrous ethanol (São Paulo state) is only 1.08% lower than that registered in the same period last crop, in real terms (IGP-M). As for anhydrous, the decrease is 2.71% in the same comparison.
Considering the average in September, the CEPEA/ESALQ Index for hydrous ethanol surpasses by almost 7% that verified in September/23. As for anhydrous (spot market only), the CEPEA/ESALQ Index rose 8.41% compared to that registered one year ago, in real terms.
Prices have been sustained by the advantage of ethanol against gasoline in the retail market of major consuming states in Brazil. Data from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) show that in São Paulo, from April to late September, ethanol quotes averaged BRL 3.76 per liter, amounting for 65.3% of gasoline prices.
The pace of trades involving hydrous ethanol was slow in the last week of September. Purchasers were unwilling to trade due to deals closed previously and to oil price drops. As for sellers, some producing units needed to flow the product, while others remained away from trades in the spot market.
