Supply reduction limits exports of robusta coffee

Publicidade

Cepea, April 16, 2025 – The volume of coffee shipped by Brazil (robusta and arabica) dropped in March. According to data from the Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafé), the reduction is mainly attributed to the decrease of robusta coffee exports (green coffee). Brazil sold 138.6 thousand bags of this variety to the international market in March, 40% less than in February/25 and lower than in March/24 (862.5 thousand bags). It is worth noting that robusta shipments hit records last year.

The decrease of robusta coffee exports has been observed since December/24 and it is related to the low availability of the product in the domestic market. The harvesting of the new season (2025/26) in Espírito Santo is about to start, which tends to boost the supply, increasing exports especially in the second semester.

Total exports (arábica, robusta and industrialized coffee) amounted 3.287 million bags in March, 3.8% below that verified in the month before and 25% down compared to March/24 – data from Cecafé. On the other hand, the income obtained with international sales rose 41.8% from February to March, totaling USD 1.321 billion. This result indicates that coffee prices are sharply higher this year.

In the partial of the 2024/25 season (from July/24 to March/25), coffee shipments totaled 33.65 million bags, a record for the period.

Considering arabica alone, 2.81 million bags were exported in March (green coffee), 3% below that in the month before. In spite of the decrease, the amount is close to the record for the month (3.3 million bags in the 2021/22 season).
