CATTLE – The fed cattle market has been in an upward trend since July. In early September, some trades have hit BRL 250/arroba in São Paulo state. In Mato Grosso do Sul, this value was reached in late August. On September 13, CEPEA/B3 Index for fed cattle (São Paulo State) closed at BRL 254.00, for an increase of 6% against that on August 30. In August, quotations upped 3.12%.
The weather was very dry in the first fortnight of September, and the supply of pasture-raised animals was restricted. Delivery windows are likely to be filled with animals from feedlots.
Between April and mid-July, the volume of animals in feedlots was smaller compared to that in the same period last year, according to data from DSM, in a partnership with Cepea. It means that the volume of animals ready to be slaughtered in the coming months may be smaller than in last year. However, it is worth noting that the beef production depends on productivity.
SLAUGHTER – The number of female animals (cow and heifer) slaughtered totaled 8.8 million in the first semester of 2024, accounting for 45.7% of total slaughters. In the same period of last year, 6.92 million animals were slaughtered, representing 44.06% of the total – data from IBGE.
In the second quarter of this year, the volume of slaughtered cows was practically the same as the record verified in the first quarter of 2014. As for heifer, 2.769 million animals were slaughtered in the first semester, accounting for 14.4% of the total slaughter, a record considering the period.
SWINE – The purchase power of swine farmers in São Paulo against major inputs used in the activity has been moving up in September, influenced by more significant increases of live swine quotations compared to those observed for corn and soybean meal.
POULTRY – Chicken meat quotations have started September moving up in most areas surveyed by Cepea. The typical demand increase at the beginning of the month, due to the bigger purchase power (because of the receiving of wages), boosted values. Players say that many agents from the wholesale market needed to replenish stocks.
SLAUGHTER – Data from IBGE released on Sept. 5 indicate that chicken slaughters hit a record in the second quarter of 2024 – considering the series from IBGE, which has started in 1997. In that period, 1.6 billion animals were slaughtered, 1% more than the volume registered in the first quarter of 2024 and upping 3.2% compared to that in the same period last year.
